Not all twist styles are the same, and not every twist style suits every head of hair. At DES Curl Spa in Vancouver, we offer five different twist styles and recommend each one differently based on what we see in the hair and hear from the client during the consultation. Here is how to think through the decision before you book.
The twist style we recommend most often, and why
Out of the five twist styles we offer, spring twists are the one we recommend most often for clients who want twists with extensions. The reason comes down to a few things that most clients do not think about until they are already in the chair.
Spring twists are one of the most lightweight, natural-looking, and low-maintenance extension twist options available. They have a soft, fluffy texture that blends beautifully with many Type 3 and Type 4 curl patterns, especially tighter curls and coils. They also age really well because the texture of the extension hair allows the client's natural hair to stay tucked into the style longer.
Compared to other extension twist styles, spring twists do not usually feel as heavy on the scalp or neck, which makes them a great option for clients who want a protective style that feels comfortable day to day. They give a natural, effortless look without needing the hair to be overly sleek or perfectly polished.
That said, the best twist style always depends on the individual. For clients who do not want extensions, two strand twists on natural hair are also a beautiful option, especially for those who want a low-manipulation style using only their own hair.
"The best twist style is not the most popular one right now. It is the one that suits your hair density, curl pattern, lifestyle, and how long you actually want the style to last."
Spring twists, passion twists, Senegalese twists, Marley twists, and two strand twists: what actually makes them different?
All five styles fall under the twist category, but they each have a very different look, feel, weight, and lifespan. Understanding those differences is what separates a style that works beautifully for weeks from one that starts falling apart after two.
- Spring twists — Lightest weight Soft, fluffy, coily texture. Blends beautifully with Type 3 and Type 4 hair. Natural hair stays tucked longer. Ages well and does not feel heavy on the scalp or neck. Best for: tighter curl patterns, clients wanting lightweight and long-lasting wear.
- Passion twists — Medium weight Soft, big, voluminous, boho look. Beautiful but they begin to age faster, often around weeks two to three, especially on shorter or tighter natural hair. Best for: looser Type 3 curl patterns, clients comfortable with a shorter wear window.
- Senegalese twists — Moderate weight Smooth, shiny, polished finish using braiding hair. Great for clients who want a neat, sleek look. Can feel heavier over time depending on size and length chosen. Best for: clients who prefer a defined, polished finish.
- Marley twists — Fuller weight Coarser, textured, bulky look from day one. Not ideal for clients wanting small or sleek twists. The thickness of the hair can become heavy on finer or lower density strands. Best for: thicker, denser hair, clients wanting a bold and natural textured look.
- Two strand twists — No extensions Done on natural hair only. One of the most genuinely low-manipulation options available. Results depend heavily on hair health, density, and length. Shrinkage is significant. Best for: clients who want a natural, no-extension style with minimal tension.

Something clients do not always factor in is that twists are not as secure as braids. Braids lock the hair in more tightly throughout the style, while twists are softer and more open. Because of that, choosing an extension texture that complements your natural curl pattern matters enormously. If someone has short Type 4 hair and chooses passion twists, their natural hair may start to poke out sooner because the extension pattern is looser. That same client with spring twists would likely have a much longer-lasting result because the tighter texture holds the natural hair in better. On the other hand, someone with a looser Type 3 curl may find that passion twists blend more naturally with their pattern than spring twists would.
What we assess before recommending a twist style
When a client sits in our chair and asks which twist style is right for them, the first thing we do is ask questions. We want to understand their personal preference, their lifestyle, and their hair goals before we ever look at the hair itself.
Once we understand what they want, we move into the professional assessment. Here is what we are looking at:
- Hair density — Determines how heavy the style can safely go. Finer or lower density hair needs a lighter extension option to avoid overloading the roots.
- Curl pattern — Determines how well different extension textures blend. Tighter patterns blend better with coilier textures like spring twists. Looser patterns may blend more naturally with passion twists.
- Strand thickness — Fine strands have less room for error with heavier extensions. We factor this into every recommendation before suggesting an extension style.
- Scalp condition — Sensitivity, existing buildup, or tension history all affect which styles and installation methods are appropriate for that client.
- Lifestyle — Wash frequency, activity level, and how the client typically wears their hair daily all affect which style will actually work long term.
- Longevity goal — How long the client wants the style to last shapes the recommendation significantly. Some styles age faster than others and that needs to be discussed upfront.
We do not recommend a style just because it is trending. We recommend based on the client's hair, their goals, their lifestyle, and what will give them the best experience once they leave the salon.
A real client story: when the inspiration photo and the hair do not match
One client story that stands out involved a client with very short Type 4 hair who wanted 22-inch passion twists. During the consultation, she explained she was preparing to move and wanted a style that would last as long as possible so she could keep her hair tucked away without worrying about it.
Based on her hair length, curl pattern, and lifestyle, passion twists were not my first recommendation. They are beautiful, but they are looser and more voluminous. With short Type 4 hair, the natural hair can start to poke out sooner because the extension texture does not hold the hair in as securely. I also explained that 22 inches would add extra weight, especially if she planned to wear the twists up in a ponytail often. That could create tension on her scalp and discomfort around her neck over time.
My recommendation was a shorter spring twist, around 16 inches. It would have been lighter, blended better with her natural texture, and likely lasted longer through her move. She chose to go ahead with the passion twists because she loved the look. About three weeks later, she replied to our follow-up email with photos. The exact things we discussed during the consultation had started to happen. Her natural hair was beginning to frizz out of the twists, she had been wearing them up often, and the length was starting to feel heavy on her neck.
It was not a negative experience overall, but it was a real learning moment. She realised that next time, she would factor in the professional recommendation alongside the style photo she loved. That is exactly why the consultation matters so much. The goal is not to talk a client out of what they want. The goal is to help them understand how that style will actually live on their hair.
What every client should understand before booking a twist style
Twist styles are never one size fits all. They are popular right now for good reason. They can be beautiful, low manipulation, lightweight, and genuinely protective when done and maintained properly. But not every twist style suits every hair type, and not every twist style will look the same on every person.
A client may see a photo of natural two strand twists on someone with high density, long, healthy hair and expect the exact same result. But hair density, length, curl pattern, shrinkage, split ends, and overall hair health all affect the final look. Twists also shrink and spring up more than people expect, especially natural two strand twists. If length is very important to you, that needs to be part of the consultation conversation.
A protective style still requires maintenance. A style is only protective if you continue caring for your natural hair and scalp while it is installed. That means cleansing when needed, keeping the scalp comfortable, hydrating the hair regularly, and avoiding too much tension throughout the wear period.
"Our job is not to give you the style you saw in a photo. Our job is to make sure you understand how that choice will affect the look, comfort, longevity, and health of your hair so you can make the best decision for yourself."

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between spring twists and passion twists?
Spring twists use a fluffy, coily extension hair that blends well with tighter curl patterns and tends to be lighter on the scalp. Passion twists use a softer, more voluminous water wave-style hair that gives a boho look. Passion twists are generally fuller and more dramatic but age faster, especially on shorter or tighter natural hair. Spring twists tend to hold their shape longer and feel lighter to wear day to day.
- How long do twist styles last?
It depends on the style and the client's hair. Passion twists typically look freshest for two to three weeks. Spring and Senegalese twists can last closer to six to eight weeks with proper maintenance. Two strand twists on natural hair vary significantly depending on hair health, density, and how well they are maintained. For any extension style, we recommend removing them by eight weeks maximum to protect the natural hair underneath.
- Which twist style is best for Type 4 hair?
Spring twists are generally the best extension option for Type 4 hair because the coily texture of the extension hair complements tighter curl patterns well and helps the natural hair stay blended and tucked into the style longer. Two strand twists on natural hair are also an excellent option for Type 4 clients who want a low-manipulation style without extensions. The best choice still depends on density, strand thickness, and lifestyle.
- Are twist styles truly protective?
Twist styles can be genuinely protective when installed correctly and maintained well. That means choosing an extension weight that does not overload the natural hair, keeping the scalp cleansed while the style is in, hydrating the hair regularly, and removing the style within a healthy timeframe. A twist style that is too heavy, left in too long, or installed with too much tension stops being protective regardless of how it looks.
- Do I need a consultation before booking a twist style?
At DES Curl Spa, yes. Every twist appointment begins with a thorough consultation because the style that looks beautiful on someone else may not be the right choice for your hair density, curl pattern, or lifestyle. We look at your natural hair, listen to your goals, and give you our professional recommendation. The client always makes the final decision, but our job is to make sure that decision is an informed one.
